Obituary for David A. Appel
David A. Appel, age 82 of Stevens Point, formerly of Wisconsin Rapids passed away at the Portage County Health Care Center on Thursday morning June 1, 2017.
Funeral services for David will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday June 6, 2017 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plover. Rev. Ben Sheets will officiate. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 4:00 - 8:00 pm on Monday at the Plover - Shuda Funeral Home in Plover. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10:00 until the time of services at the church. Burial will be at the Plover Cemetery.
David was born June 14, 1934 in Wisconsin Rapids, the son of Albert & Minnie (Bautz) Appel. David began work at West Grand IGA in Wis. Rapids at the age of 17. He graduated from Lincoln High School where he met Jean Wilpolt, and they married June 26, 1954. The couple settled in Rapids where his 4 sons were born. David joined the National Guards, serving from 1962-1972 with 1 year of active duty at Ft. Lewis, WA. David and his family moved to Oshkosh in 1962 where he continued employment with the Copps Company as a meat cutter, asst. manager, then store manager. The family moved to Plover in 1972, and David worked in the Copps warehouse as Meat Specialist until retiring after 47 1/2 years of service, in 1999.
David enjoyed golf, oil painting, woodworking, gardening (he was known for his immaculate lawn), working in his yard, all eagles and bluebirds, and was an avid Packers fan. He was very involved in his church in Oshkosh and at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, serving as treasurer, as well as working on the church grounds.
David is survived by his 4 Children; Michael (friend Anna Cann), Orlando, FL; Steven (Amy), Carlsbad, CA; Daniel (Julie), Green Bay; Kevin, Oshkosh. 4 Grandchildren; Jill (Nick) Lemke, DePere; Kyle Appel (friend Holly Bistodeau)Minneapolis , David Appel, Gainsville, FL; Daniel Appel, Tampa, FL. 3 Great Grandchildren "His 3 Amigos" : Brady, Clayton (CJ), and Ian Lemke, DePere. His sister Joan Fles (New York) a sister-in-Law: Joan (Don) Allen, WI Rapids, and David's special friend: Rosalynn Horsley, Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean in 2001, his 3 sisters: Lucille Bublitz ; Helen Bushmaker, Elizabeth Brinkman, and his brother Charles Appel. His brothers-in-law, Rudolph Bublitz, Norbert Bushmaker, Fred Brinkman, and sister-in-law Arzella Appel.
David's family wishes to thank the staff at Brookdale Living Center, where David resided from 2014-15, and the Portage County Health Care Center where he had resided since January of 2016 for all the care and compassion they had shown David.
