Leonard "Len" Swift


Leonard "Len" Swift, age 82 of Stevens Point unexpectedly went to his final resting place on February 25, 2010 at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau.

A mass of christian burial for Leonard will be at 10:30 AM on Monday March 1, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Al Burkhardt will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be at King National Cemetery in the Spring. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 5:00 - 8:00 PM Sunday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel, and again Monday morning from 9:30 -10:15 at the church. A general rosary will be prayed at 6:30 Sunday evening at the funeral chapel. A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established in his name for the Portage County Public Library and St Joseph Church.

Leonard was born August 29, 1927 in Waukesha, the son of James and Ruth (Anthes) Swift. He entered the United States Navy on July 23, 1945 in Milwaukee. He earned the World War Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 27, 1948. Leonard married Imogene R. Sanders on October 7, 1950. He graduated from St. Norbert College in 1952. Leonard was active in the Army R.O.T.C. while in college and after until 1974. Leonard was a teacher for a number of years until he became the Library Director of the Portage County Public Library for 17 years until his retirement.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Imogene. their six children: Jean Marie Swift (Kevin Boynton), Rothschild; Mary Kaye (Donald) Ernest, Mequon; Michael (Leslie) Swift, West Bend; James (Ann Marie) Swift, Milwaukee; Patricia Ann (John) Schmitz, Necedah; Carol Lynn (James) Schelke, VA. 12 grandchildren: Matthew and James Stautz, Darcy (Robert) Borelli, Michael (Malou) Ernest, Samantha (Patrick Henderson) Ernest; Christopher Ernest, Dustin and Derek Swift, Jeffery and Peter Swift, Patrick-Michael Schelke, and Jessica Schmitz. Seven great grandchildren. Three brothers: Thomas Swift and John Swift, both of Milwaukee. William (Karin) Swift, Sussex. Three sisters: Joanne Boyle, Kenosha; Kate Swift, Milwaukee; Sandra (Charles) McLester, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Phillip and Ernest. Two sisters: Rosalie and Donna.
