The Rev. Canon Charles F. Slagle, age 85, passed away peacefully at Whispering Pines in Plover, WI, July 23, 2020.
A Funeral Service for Charles will be held at 5:30PM on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at the Shuda Funeral Chapel - 3200 Stanely St., Stevens Point, WI. Friends and family may gather to share memories from 4-5:30PM on Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be held at 11 on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columubus, OH.
Charles was born on May 27, 1935 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Floyd and Louise (Cook) Slagle. He attended local schools in Columbus and graduated from Columbus South High School. He attended Ohio State University. He later attended the University of CA Berkeley and graduated with a degree in Theology. He married Virginia (Ginny) E. Hewson November 2, 1956 in Columbus. The two were united in marriage until her passing on Feb 6, 2008. Charles later married Elizabeth (Betty) Foraker-Mack on July 2, 2011 in Custer, WI.
Charles had a successful career in the baking industry and worked throughout the country. He worked for Wonder Bread Hostess Cake in Columbus, OH, Rye, NY, and Hartford, CT. He also worked for Van de Kamp’s Holland Dutch Bakery in Los Angeles, CA, Bake Rite Bakery in Plover, WI, Heileman Baking Co. in Minneapolis, MN, Svenhard’s Swedish Bakery in Oakland, CA, and a consultant to many more.
Charles was the founder of CGS Marketing Inc. in Custer, WI which was a baking, advertising, and marketing business. Later in life, Charles was ordained as an Anglican Priest, becoming a Canon. He was the rector of the following churches; St. Martin of Tours, Concord, CA, St. Mathews, Custer, WI, St. Anne’s Anglican Church, Grove City, OH, All Saints Church, Naperville, IL, Holy Apostles Church, Pewaukee, WI. Father Slagle was the Fire Chaplain for the Stevens Point/Plover Fire Dept., WI, Hemet Fire Dept., CA and the Wisconsin State Fire Chief’s Association.
Charles was also a member of the Germania Singing & Sport Society, Columbus, OH, The Ralph R Rickly Masonic Lodge, Columbus, OH, and was a Masonic Knight Templar.
He is survived by his wife of 9 years Elizabeth (Betty) Foraker-Mack, Hemet, CA. His children, Pamala Pulver, Troy, Ohio, Charly & Trixie, Kilcornan, Limerick, Ireland, James & Becky, Stevens Point, WI and Ron, Stevens Point, WI; 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years Virginia (Ginny) E. Hewson and his parents Floyd and Louise (Cook) Slagle.
