Loretta E. Nowak, age 85, of Stevens Point passed away Thursday, December 3rd, 2020 at St. Michaels Hospital. She was born on February 9th, 1935 in Stevens Point, WI to the late Carl and Monica (Kieliszewski) Gollon. On November 26th, 1953 she married Victor “Vic” Nowak. The couple settled in Stevens Point and raised their family.

Loretta retired as Dietary Manager in 1998 from the Portage County Home after 24 years of service. She was known for the delicious home cooked meals served to the residents and visitors. Everyone always looked forward to the Sunday dinners with homemade pie.

After retirement, Loretta became active with volunteering at church picnics, the Moose Lodge, St. Peter and St. Casimir parish fundraisers. She also cooked for St. Peter and St. Casimir funeral luncheons. She was a long-time member of the Ladies of The Moose and St. Peters Rosary Society. Loretta was a very generous and caring person who spent much of her life helping others. She enjoyed being in the company of her family and dear friends.

Loretta enjoyed staying active as a member of the YMCA. Loretta also enjoyed reading, being outdoors, gardening, fishing and her two cats Oscar and Gracie. She had fun traveling out west and to Alaska with her late husband to visit with her sister and family. She also enjoyed road trips with friends and organizing social activities. She made the most of every moment. Her true passion was her love of cooking and baking and she spent much of her life sharing her skills with her family and friends. Paczki and pies were her favorite. You knew if you stopped by for a visit, you would always be welcomed with something to eat.

Loretta is survived by her three children: James (Deborah) Nowak, Barbara (Greg) Marsicek, and Frank (Carrie) Nowak, all of Stevens Point, WI. Brothers: Fritz Gollon, Phil (Jane) Gollon, Billy (Arlene) Gollon, all of Stevens Point, WI and Bud (Althea) Gollon of Dodgeville, WI. Four grandchildren: Jacqueline, Christine, Gregory, and Alexa. Six great grandchildren: Bradley, Ana, Jacob, Norah, Benjamin, and William. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters Jeanette and Viola, and brother Carl (Sonny).

Due the COVID pandemic, a private service will be held for immediate family only. A celebration of Loretta’s life will be held in the summer of 2021 when we are all able to gather safely.

Loretta’s family would like to thank the courageous doctors, nurses and hospital staff at St. Michaels Hospital for their amazing care and love. They were there for her when we couldn’t be.

To all of you reading this who knew Loretta, thank you for all the wonderful and memorable years of friendship and being a part of her life.

I got to know Loretta from our swimming exercise at the YMCA. Her daughter (Barb) would peak in sometimes, to see if she was exercising or just talking. I also worked with her son Jim at the Paper Mill for many years.
I'll miss her stories. Jim Stensberg

Loretta will always have a special place in my heart. We worked together, had so much fun together and even got into a little trouble together. I will never forget our adventure of dumpster diving. We would always have a good laugh when we talked about that day. I loved to talk politics with Loretta. We always saw eye to eye on that subject. I will miss my good friend. For now it is goodbye but it is also see you later.

Loretta was a beautiful and kind lady. Her generosity in all that she did is to be admired. She loved her family dearly and was so proud of them. She loved to speak of her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be missed by all those who knew her. We extend our sympathy to Loretta’s family.

Barb and family,
I worked at the Portage County home as a CNA and know first hand how Loretta loved to make the residents happy.
I remember when she would come out carrying a plate of homemade potato pancakes and go to each table asking if anyone would like more. She always was smiling and laughing. My sympathy to you on the loss of your mom.

My deep sympathy to all of the family of Loretta. She was such a positive and generous person and I am grateful for having known her for a long time. I shared many of her delicious meals at Portage County Home when my Dad was a resident for over 5 years. May she rejoice in heaven and may we all meet her again when we are called to our heavenly home.
